These two facts are not a coincidence. They are an invitation.

At Moonshot Press, we believe that journalism’s highest calling is not to inflame, but to illuminate. Not to sort citizens into camps, but to equip them with the knowledge and tools to govern themselves. The Election 2026 Hub is our fullest expression of that belief: a landmark civic journalism initiative built for this pivotal moment in American history.

Trust in democratic institutions is eroding. Voter turnout remains alarmingly low. Misinformation, cynicism, and disengagement have become defining features of the public sphere. Meanwhile, artificial intelligence is reshaping the very information ecosystem on which democracy depends. The problems are real — but so is the possibility of renewal.

“The decisions citizens make in 2026 will determine what kind of democracy exists in 2076. But this one arrives at a rare convergence. As America approaches its semiquincentennial — 250 years since the founding declaration that legitimate government derives from the consent of the governed — the 2026 midterms offer more than a standard electoral cycle. They present a historic opportunity to ask: what does that consent look like today?

The Election 2026 Hub is our answer to that question. Through deeply researched Citizen Briefs, deliberative discussion guides, candidate engagement tools, and our pioneering Useful General Intelligence (UGI) methodology — AI applied rigorously to civic problems — we are building the infrastructure for informed democratic participation at scale.

Six Challenges That Will Define Our Future

The Hub focuses public attention on six urgent, interconnected issues — the defining civic questions of our time. Each is covered in depth through Moonshot Journalism: evidence-based, accessible, and resolutely solution-oriented.

🗳️ Renewing Democracy Trust in democratic institutions is in crisis. Voter turnout is stagnant. Polarization has poisoned public discourse. As we celebrate 250 years of American self-government, this is the defining moment to ask: will we double down on cynicism — or rise to rebuild trust through transparency, accountability, and participation? How can we make democracy more participatory, accessible, and effective — from school board meetings to the halls of Congress?

🤖 Artificial Intelligence and the Social Contract AI is transforming work, education, media, and public life — often without our input. From deepfakes to automated decision-making in courts, schools, and hiring, we are racing toward a future shaped by algorithms few understand and fewer still regulate. What values should guide the development and deployment of artificial intelligence — and who gets to decide?

🏥 Universal Healthcare and Health Justice Even after decades of debate, tens of millions remain uninsured or underinsured. Rising costs, provider shortages, mental health neglect, and systemic inequities expose a broken healthcare model — one that often manages disease rather than promoting health. How do we create a healthcare system that serves all Americans and promotes lifelong well-being, not just survival?

💰 Economic Opportunity and Intergenerational Equity Wages stagnate while the cost of living soars. Wealth inequality deepens. Meanwhile, the national debt mortgages the future of young Americans while political leaders dodge hard fiscal choices. What would an economy built for generational justice and broad-based prosperity actually look like?

💊 The Addiction Crisis and Community Resilience The opioid epidemic and rising rates of suicide, depression, and “deaths of despair” point to a deeper crisis of connection. Addiction is not only a medical issue — it is a social, economic, and spiritual wound. How can we rebuild communities that foster resilience, meaning, and recovery for all?

🦠 Public Health and Pandemic Preparedness COVID-19 revealed both the strength and fragility of our public health infrastructure. Misinformation, distrust, underfunding, and fragmented leadership left many Americans unprotected and unprepared. Future biological threats are inevitable. What lessons from the pandemic can we turn into permanent reforms — and how do we ensure no community is left behind?

The Citizen Toolbox: Democracy in Action

At the heart of Moonshot Press is a commitment to reinvigorate the role of the citizen within our democracy. The Citizen Toolbox is both a symbol and a practical resource for that mission — a curated suite of nonpartisan tools and engagement platforms designed to empower individuals, strengthen communities, and reimagine democratic participation for the 21st century.

The Toolbox is not passive reading material. It is a platform for action. Every resource maps directly to a step in the citizen engagement journey — from first learning about an issue to sustaining pressure on elected officials long after election day. All resources are free and continuously updated.

Here is what’s inside:

📚 Citizen Briefs (Learn) Clear, accessible, evidence-based overviews of the nation’s most urgent policy challenges — written for citizens, not specialists. Each Brief cuts through partisan noise to provide the factual foundation needed for meaningful engagement. Covering all six core Hub issues, these are designed for sharing in communities, classrooms, and civic groups.

🗣️ Discussion Guides (Connect) Structured templates for hosting community conversations that foster understanding, not division. Facilitator-ready and adaptable for groups of any size — whether a faith community, a neighborhood association, a college classroom, or a family gathering. Available for both in-person and virtual forums, these guides help Americans talk across political difference with shared facts as the common ground.

🎤 Candidate Engagement Templates (Engage) Tools to help you ask substantive, values-driven questions at town halls, debates, and candidate events — and evaluate responses based on real issues, not soundbites or political theater. Organized by the six core issues, these templates also include frameworks for submitting questions directly to campaign offices and event moderators.

📣 Advocacy Strategies (Advocate) Step-by-step guides for translating personal concern into public influence. Whether you are writing your first op-ed, organizing a petition, or navigating a local lobbying effort, these pathways make advocacy accessible to anyone — regardless of prior experience. Formats include letter-writing campaigns, public comment guides, and frameworks for community organizing.

🧠 Media Literacy Resources (Sustain) Navigate today’s fractured information landscape with confidence. In an era of deepfakes, algorithmic distortion, and partisan spin, these resources equip citizens to be discerning and well-informed. Includes frameworks for identifying disinformation, verifying sources, evaluating political advertising, and elevating credible, solution-focused journalism.

🤖 UGI — Useful General Intelligence (Innovate) Moonshot Press’s pioneering methodology: AI applied rigorously and responsibly to civic problems. Rather than allowing algorithms to distort the democratic process, UGI harnesses AI’s analytical power to strengthen it — with transparency and citizen oversight built in. Applications include policy analysis and evidence synthesis, public comment aggregation, solution modeling across complex interconnected challenges, and accessible AI explainers for the issues shaping the 2026 election.

👉 Explore the full Citizen Toolbox at Moonshot Press

Moonshot Journalism: Our Foundation

James Madison warned that a popular government without popular information is a prologue to farce or tragedy. Moonshot Journalism takes that warning seriously. Our approach is solution-oriented — slower, deeper, and oriented toward public problem-solving rather than partisan performance. We prioritize clarity over sensationalism, and the civic commons over the outrage cycle.

This is not neutral journalism. It is journalism in service of democracy. We name the problems plainly. We present the evidence rigorously. And we trust citizens — not experts, not algorithms, not political operatives — to make their own informed judgments.

“Democracy is not something we inherit. It is something we practice.”

Your Path to Engagement

The health of our democracy depends not on the decisions of a few leaders, but on the sustained efforts of millions. The Election 2026 Hub offers a clear, five-step path — and the Citizen Toolbox provides the resources for every stage:

Learn — Access Citizen Briefs: evidence-based overviews of the six issues that will define this election.

Connect — Use Discussion Guides to host or join forums that build understanding across difference.

Engage — Bring Candidate Templates to town halls and debates. Ask real questions. Demand real answers.

Advocate — Use Advocacy Guides to translate your community’s concerns into op-eds, petitions, and proposals.

Sustain — Stay active beyond election day. Hold elected officials accountable. Democracy is not seasonal.

Whether you are a first-time voter, a seasoned organizer, or somewhere in between — the Election 2026 Hub meets you where you are. The best way to honor 250 years of the American experiment is not with fireworks alone, but with participation. Not just celebration, but engagement.

Access the Citizen Toolbox → Explore the Election 2026 Hub →

Get Involved with Election 2026

Subscribe now

<picture></picture>

Project 2026: A Madisonian View

Prescription to our current illness

We are living in a moment of profound distrust. Faith in the federal government and other core institutions is at an all-time low, and many Americans question the very value of our democracy. President Donald Trump returning to the White House stirs wildly divergent reactions: some fear for the future of our republic, while others celebrate what they view as a “liberation day.” Meanwhile, the ongoing activities of DOGE, led by Elon Musk, seek to radically reshape federal institutions and weaken the traditional guardrails of democratic governance—horrifying some and delighting others. With personal confirmations taking place for leadership of major federal agencies, polarization has only deepened. For many observers, the new administration appears to be following the Project 2025 blueprint for dismantling governmental checks and balances and edging toward an authoritarian presidency.

Amid these unsettling developments, we approach the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence—one of the greatest documents ever composed. This milestone offers a unique opportunity to reconnect with the founders’ vision and reclaim the role of citizens as sovereign participants in government. It is in this spirit that I look to James Madison, revered as the “Father of the Constitution,” and ask what he might think of our contemporary politics—and more importantly, what he would do to set us on a healthier path.

For the past decade, I’ve immersed myself in Madison’s political philosophy, his analytic and communication skills, and the personal qualities that shaped his civic endeavors. His dedication to Enlightenment ideals shines through in the “architectonic document” he helped craft, encoding the nation’s political DNA. As a psychiatrist, I’m struck by Madison’s nuanced grasp of human nature—how “passions and factions” drive individual political choices and ripple through the body politic. These insights informed his remedy for the systemic failings of the Articles of Confederation: a constitutional structure built on checks and balances, distribution of power between federal and state governments, and vigilance against factional “disease.”

The Vision: First Principles

A central challenge facing our nation today is the absence of a unified, collective vision. Historically, America has thrived when leaders and citizens alike rallied around clear, shared ideals—beginning with the Declaration of Independence, which continues to inspire efforts to strengthen our democracy. As we near the 250th anniversary of this remarkable experiment, we can—and should—update that founding vision to confront modern realities, forging a renewed sense of purpose that unites Americans in a common cause.

A Madisonian Strategic Plan

James Madison developed a bold, systematic strategy to address the nation’s early problems. He:

Confronted immediate threats in Virginia and elsewhere.

Called for the Constitutional Convention and influenced its outcome.

Insisted on ratification by the people, not just by state legislatures—even if that “people” was initially limited to property-owning white men.

Legislated the Bill of Rights, adding the first ten amendments to the Constitution in direct response to public opinion.

By making citizens stakeholders in adopting the Constitution, Madison established a sturdy foundation of public consent. His approach—echoing a physician’s practice of diagnosing illnesses and prescribing remedies—remains instructive today.

Diagnosis and Treatment of the Body Politic

Madison famously employed a disease metaphor in describing the “Vices of the Political System.” Under the Articles of Confederation, government was beset by factionalism, instability, and an inability to pursue the common good. Madison’s “treatment plan”—our Constitution—was designed to address these ills through a republican form of government, separated powers, federal-state balances, and robust checks on factional dominance.

“By a faction,” he wrote, “I understand a number of citizens … who are united and actuated by some common impulse of passion, or of interest, adverse to … the permanent and aggregate interests of the community.”

He summed up the core dysfunction:

“Complaints are everywhere heard … that our governments are too unstable, that the public good is disregarded in the conflicts of rival parties … by the superior force of an … overbearing majority.”

Madison proposed two cures for the “mischiefs of faction”:

Remove their causes (which threatened to destroy liberty), or

Control their effects by building a well-structured republic over a broad territory, with representative institutions that refine and enlarge public views.

Madison and Public Opinion

Beyond structural checks and balances, Madison held that the ultimate source of sovereignty rests with the people. Properly channeled, public opinion can compel officials to govern responsibly. Realizing this ideal has never been easy—especially now, when social media, 24-hour news, and vast economic interests wield enormous influence over public discourse.

Still, Madison’s core insight endures: if citizens meaningfully deliberate, they can help shape and stabilize the body politic. That is why reclaiming citizen engagement and ensuring that “public opinion” genuinely represents the public—rather than powerful factions—remains a cornerstone of any healthy democracy.

The Role of Citizen Public Opinion

Although countless advocacy groups push narrow or broad agendas, individual citizens are often relegated to the role of voters, petition-signers, or social-media commentators, merely reacting to established agendas. Our collective task is to build a citizen-oriented strategy that clarifies key challenges and energizes broader participation. By renewing our national vision and reinforcing the social contract, we can better navigate intensifying partisanship, economic inequality, and cultural-religious divisions.

Crowdsourcing, Collaboration, and Deliberation

Project 2026 draws on Madison’s structured approach by offering frameworks and tools that empower citizens to cooperate in problem-solving. Drawing inspiration from a free press, adult education, and the medical case presentation model, Project 2026 encourages communities to recognize issues, diagnose systemic flaws, and propose solution-oriented “treatment plans” for our political ailments. Its three key components include:

The Citizen Brief
A concise, data-driven document that reframes problems, provides relevant context, and outlines possible solutions—designed to inform rather than overwhelm citizens.

The Case Presentation
Borrowing from medical practice, the Case Presentation process tackles specific issues (e.g., the opioid crisis, election reform) by systematically diagnosing challenges and suggesting targeted remedies. This method fosters shared understanding and concrete next steps.

The Citizen Commission
A structured forum in which citizens, experts, and stakeholders collaborate to identify and implement solutions. This “think-and-do” tank continually assesses progress and adjusts strategies as necessary.

Moonshot Press: The Public Publication of Project 2026

Moonshot Press has a straightforward yet profound mission: to contribute to the fulfillment of the Declaration of Independence’s radical promise—that all people are created equal and entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. As we anticipate the 250th anniversary of our national experiment, Moonshot Press will be the platform for publishing and promoting the insights, instruments, and frameworks of Project 2026, ensuring that citizens claim their rightful role in shaping governance.

Shrink Notes: Psychological Insights into Politics and Healthcare

Within Moonshot Press, Shrink Notes offers a psychologically informed lens on politics and healthcare. Led by psychiatrist Dr. Shimon Waldfogel, the blog explores the behaviors, motivations, and interactions of individuals, institutions, and organizations in order to pinpoint and address root causes of dysfunction. By illuminating the emotional underpinnings of political action, Shrink Notes aims to chart practical courses toward positive change.

Conclusion

Ultimately, Project 2026 rests on the principle that a healthy republic demands engaged, well-informed citizens who continually refashion and reaffirm their government. This vision of “citizen sovereignty” traces directly back to the founders’ belief that authority springs from the people themselves. In practice, it entails nurturing a culture of deliberation, collaboration, and mutual respect—qualities that James Madison saw as crucial to sustaining liberty and keeping factional passions in check.

By applying Madison’s “disease metaphor,” we can confront our modern political ills: identify their symptoms, diagnose their causes, and implement solutions that protect both liberty and justice. Project 2026 extends an open invitation to everyone who believes in re-centering our politics on the common good. As we commemorate 250 years since the Declaration of Independence, let us honor the brilliant architecture Madison helped construct—and continue refining it for generations to come.

Subscribe now

Rekindling the Vision of American Democracy

A Call to Citizen Engagement

Shimon Waldfogel

Introduction

As we approach the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, our nation stands at a pivotal moment. The 2024 presidential election has concluded with a decisive victory for Donald Trump, bringing a renewed focus on the "Make America Great Again" agenda. This outcome has stirred a range of emotions: some feel hope and empowerment, believing their voices are finally being heard; others feel concern and uncertainty about the future of our democracy.

Amidst these contrasting feelings lies a profound opportunity—a chance to reflect on the foundational principles that have guided the United States since its inception. Now is the time to reconnect with the core ideals enshrined in the Declaration of Independence and recommit ourselves to the constitutional principles that have sustained our republic for nearly 250 years.

A Journey from Medicine to Democracy

My professional journey began in medical school, where I developed a fascination with complex systems. The human body, with its intricate network of interconnected parts, taught me the importance of understanding how individual components interact to sustain life. An assignment to design a hypothetical creature for a different planet reinforced the value of viewing systems as wholes rather than just individual elements.

As a psychiatrist, I've witnessed how individual well-being is deeply intertwined with societal health. Over the years, I've seen patients, friends, and communities affected by the shifting dynamics of our political landscape. These experiences led me to apply principles of systems thinking to our democracy, seeking ways to strengthen it by addressing systemic challenges.

A Transformative Experience

On a hot Sunday morning in August 2009, I attended a town hall meeting about the proposed healthcare legislation that would become known as "Obamacare." Expecting a civil discussion led by then-Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius and Senator Arlen Specter, I was instead met with intense anger and frustration. Citizens passionately voiced fears that the government was overreaching, threatening their freedoms, and taking what they believed was rightfully theirs.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

This wasn't just about healthcare; it reflected a broader sentiment brewing across the nation. The anger and division I witnessed mirrored the growing polarization in our society—a divide that has only intensified over the years.

Discovering Madison

Seeking to understand this deep division, I turned to the writings of James Madison, one of the key architects of the Constitution. Madison and the other founding fathers were acutely aware of the dangers of factionalism and the power of passions to both build and destroy. He believed that a strong, diverse republic with a system of checks and balances was essential to protect individual rights and prevent any one group from gaining too much power.

Reading his words, I realized that intense emotions and strong beliefs have always been part of our nation's fabric. The challenge is not to suppress these passions but to channel them constructively.

Embracing the Vision of the Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence articulates a profound vision: that all people are created equal, endowed with unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These principles have inspired generations to strive for a more just and equitable society. While we've made significant progress, there's still work to be done to fully realize this vision.

Our current political climate, marked by polarization and division, underscores the need to reaffirm our commitment to these foundational ideals. By embracing the spirit of the Declaration and upholding the constitutional principles that protect our freedoms, we can navigate today's challenges with hope and determination.

A Hopeful Plan for Citizen Engagement

At the heart of strengthening our democracy is active citizen participation. Here are some steps we can take together:

Channel Passion Positively
Instead of allowing frustration to divide us, use our energy to advocate for causes we believe in, volunteer, and support initiatives that strengthen our communities. Learn about our upcoming activities.

Promote Unity Over Division
Focus on common goals and shared values. Each person has a role to play in shaping our nation's future. By committing to the principles outlined in the Declaration of Independence and upholding constitutional values, we can contribute to a more united and prosperous America.

I invite you to join me in this journey—a collaborative effort to strengthen our democracy through informed engagement, thoughtful dialogue, and collective action. Together, we can build on the legacy of those who came before us, striving to create a nation that truly embodies the ideals of liberty, justice, and equality for all.

Conclusion

As we stand on the threshold of a new chapter in American history, let's seize this opportunity to reflect, engage, and act. Drawing on the wisdom of our founding documents and the resilience of our democratic institutions, we can face the challenges ahead with confidence and hope.

Our nation's strength lies in its people. When we come together, informed and inspired, there's no challenge we can't overcome. Let's commit to fostering understanding, promoting unity, and actively participating in our democracy.

Let's embrace our passions, learn from our history, and work collectively toward a more perfect union.

Join the Journey

Reflect on your own experiences and consider how you can contribute to a more vibrant democracy. Whether through education, community involvement, or engaging in thoughtful conversations, every action counts.

Together, we can rekindle the American spirit—a spirit of collaboration, resilience, and shared purpose. By embracing our roles as active citizens, we honor the legacy of those who came before us and pave the way for a brighter future.
